hindi is an indo-aryan language. so is urdu, particularly associated in the subcontinet with the mogul empire, in which persian was the court language. the name derive from persian zaban-e-urdu (the language of the camp), from tatar ordu ('camp'), whence also russian orda ('clan, crowd, troop'), polish horda, and english horde; compare the golden horde, a tatar people in central asia in the 14/15th centuries.
